چکیده

Mission concepts to several hundred AU and beyond are under study at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). The preliminary results of these mission studies have identified solar sails as one of the promising propulsion technologies for making these ambitious precursor and interstellar missions a reality. This paper presents solar and beamed energy sail design concepts to achieve the performance requirements identified in preliminary interstellar exploration technology roadmaps which include nearer-term interstellar precursor missions to several hundred AU and beamed power missions to Alpha Centauri and beyond. The baseline solar sail design for an interstellar probe (ISP) mission to the near-interstellar medium assumes an areal density of ldm’ (including film and structure), and a diameter of -410 m. Missions to the stars will require very large sails with areal densities approaching 0.1 g/m .

Design Rules and Scaling for Solar Sails

Useful design rules and simple scaling models have been developed for solar sails. Chief among the conclusions are 1. Sail distortions contribute to the thrust and moments primarily though the mean squared value of their derivatives (slopes), and the sail behaves like a flat sheet if the value is small. The RMS slope is therefore an important figure of merit, and sail distortion effects on the ...

SSC14-X-6 Active Solar Sail Designs for Chip-Scale Spacecraft

Centimeter-scale spacecraft, known as ”Chipsats,” have very high surface-area-to-mass ratios, which accentuates solar radiation pressure (SRP) effects. In contrast to traditional. large solar sails, chip-scale solar sails have the potential to be highly agile in terms of attitude because of their structural rigidity and low moments of inertia. This ability to easily reorient a solar sail greatl...

Comparison Final Velocity for Land Yacht with a Rigid Wing and Cloth Sail

The powering requirement of a land yacht is one of the most important aspects of its design. In this respect the wind tunnel testing is an effective design tool. In fact, changing the parameters of the vehicle and testing the changes in the wind tunnel will give us a better understanding of the most efficient vehicle, and yet it is time consuming, expensive, and has inherent scaling errors. Ano...

AIAA 2002-1703 Scalable Solar Sail Subsystem Design Considerations

Under recent contract to JPL for the New Millennium Space Technology 7 Program (ST7) AEC-Able Engineering (ABLE) developed a Scalable Solar Sail Subsystem (S). The S is a minimal mass propulsion subsystem that can be mounted to a general heritage spacecraft to provide continuous low level thrust. The design baseline is a 3-axis-stabilized 4-quadrant square sail with attitude controlled through ...

Ultra-lightweight Deployable Space Structures

The ultra-lightweight construction of large, deployable space structures is a fundamental prerequisite for the realization of Solar Sail propulsion concepts. In addition to the functionality of the deployment technique and the development of control concepts, lightweight aspects and their technical implementation play a key role in future Solar Sail missions. A further development of the set-up...
